SEO Experiments

Since Google isn't ever going to allow anyone to look under the hood at their algorithm, I feel that a good way to reverse engineer and learn what makes Google tick is to constantly come up with some theories on why the search engine behaves like it does, and why it works like it code tells it to.

While true that many people will offer insight on getting ranked in Google, I always want to know little details that might not be good to learn at the client's expense! I have a list of experiements that I am testing, and as the results come, I will present my thoughts on what I tested, how I think Google will respond, and what the outcomes were.

Test 1:

Scenario -
I've always wondered how Google values domains that have been used and abused by black hatters. Typically, a "churn and burn" domain is purchased for only one year. The black hatter quickly builds a site that is sacrificed for quick rankings through exploits, sql injections, or whatever technique they are using.

What I want to know is:
After a domain has been blacklisted by Google, is it possbile to bring the site back from the brink of a Google ban?

What I think:
I think if the domain gets a natural source of type-in traffic, I think the ban only lasts for 1 month at the most. Google can't deny traffic, right? So if "Candy.com" got used by a black hatter, I think the ban only lasts long enough for the re-inclusion request. But, if it's an obvious throw-away domain like "dsfdsfdsf.com", I think the ban could last up to 2 years. Why 2 years? That's long time in Internet years.

The plan:
Run 3 black hat sites - 1 "premium" domain and two lesser type domains and make sure they get banned by Google (I've already reported them) - and once they are toast, I will then switch the WHOIS for 1 lesser site and then build the sites out in total White Hat mode and ask for re-inclusion.

Why do I want to know this?
Often times you'll find mid-level domain names for dale that have been banned for some reason. I want to know if it's possible to rescue them, and how long of a memory Google has for domains.

When will I present the results?
Most likely not until 3 months have gone by from the time all the blacklisted sites are back in Google's index.
