The Dot CO FAIL

Fewer topics have been so easy to write about. Who in their right mind thought this was a good idea? Don’t domainers suffer enough with being called CyberSquatters?

The .co extension is simply an enabler for those who think they’ll be able to jump in and make a quick buck. I had a friend do this. He loved the new “Battlestar Galactica” show, and sure enough, as soon as he could, he picked up the .co version. Then, he actually emailed the owners of the .com asking them if they wanted to buy it.

Needless to say the UDRP was sent about 5 minutes later.

He was stunned. He couldn’t understand why it happened. After detailing the entire “typo” issue and provided some links to other cases, he got it. And he’s also out a few hundred bucks for the other domains he thought he would make a killing on.

The .CO extension will only confuse customers and it will never win in a court of law against any decent attorney. This just reeks of a money grab by the registrars and only further damages the domain investment community.

    Thanks for your article Paul. I’m personally am sick of cyber squatters, and .co was just the lesson that was needed to show that these .co domains are not worth squat.
