I always get this question from my programming/designer friends, so I figured instead of emailing them each time, I can send this post instead…
Links can be broken down in to two categories:
Type and extension
Types:
- directory link
- profile link
- blog post/comment link
- article link
- press release link
- text link on site
Extensions:
Top tier
- .gov
- .mil
- .edu
Then second tier:
- .com
- .org
- .net
- all country extensions (.nl, .cn, .ca, etc)
Everything else is garbage, especially:
- .info
- .biz
- .mobi
This doesn’t mean that there aren’t quality sites with these extensions, but as a whole, they are typically used by spammers and their MFA sites that clutter up the search results.
Hope this helps!
