This might seem like a loaded question (and it is!) but SEO training is not for everyone.
Search Engine Optimization is not something that is a one-time deal. While you can learn the basics and also get a general understanding behind the process of keyword research, on and off page factors and social media, SEO is an on-going effort.
The sites that are ranked number one in Google aren’t resting on their laurels. They are constantly adding new content or acquiring links. That might not appear on the surface, but it’s happening.
SEO Training is not for everyone
If you are just getting started on your career in search, SEO training might make sense a few months into the learning process. SEO is so much about knowing the little details that the search engines want to see. There are many free resources that offer great information to get started. Blogs, forums and search industry sites should be a part of your everyday life.
The next piece is the social components. Not only must you know how to optimize content for each of the main sites, but you must also know how to get “Likes” on facebook, followers on Twitter, and views for your YouTube videos. There is a distinct method for each one, and not all of them will make sense for all situations.
What good are those top rankings if you aren’t familiar with web analytic software? Google Analytics, WebTrends, Omniture and Clicky are the industry leaders in regards to how to see the traffic as it flows through your site. How can you monitor conversions if you don’t know where the person converted?
Then we get to the coding aspects of SEO. Yes, you can probably get away with about 95% of the coding being done for you thanks to WordPress and other template type services that come pre-loaded with “SEO-optimized” layouts. But, can you look at the server and implement a 301 server-side re-direct? Do you need to know that? Or is that an IT department issue? It could be the IT department’s responsibility, but you need to know that they implemented it correctly.
SEO Training – Who Should Get It?
As you can see, this is only scratching the surface when it comes to the responsibilities of the “SEO Person.”
This is why SEO training is not for everyone. It will be best served by the person who will be handling the day-to-day activities of the search efforts. Learning SEO is a time commitment that one must undertake if they want to have success in ranking their sites.
